Tender booklets NS Stations & ProRail

NS Stations & ProRail

Concession documents

120 Stations

about this project

Commissioned by NS Stations and ProRail, I spent several years developing comprehensive tender documents for six regional rail concessions in the Netherlands. These documents are compiled by NS Stations and ProRail for the provinces, which issue the concessions.

The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) oversees transparency and completeness, ensuring that carriers can submit tenders based on consistent information. My role: fully designing, structuring, and technically developing these documents – in close collaboration with the teams at NS Stations and ProRail.

Concessions & publications

I worked on the booklets for the concessions:

  • MerwedeLingelijn
  • Valley line
  • Northern Train Services
  • Achterhoek Riverland
  • Twente/ZHO
  • Vecht valley lines / Zutphen–Hengelo–Oldenzaal

I created two publications for each concession: one for NS Stations and one for ProRail. Together, they offer the provinces, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), and the participating carriers a clear and comprehensive overview of all stations within the concession.

Layout, floor plans & technology

A key component of this project was the design of a single, uniform floor plan style for all concessions. The source files varied widely—from architectural drawings and cleaning plans to construction archives, Google Maps, land registry data, and field photographs.

I rebuilt all this information and translated it into clear, unambiguous, and completely consistent maps, so that every station—regardless of the original source—is presented in the same style.

In addition, I provided:

  • typography, iconography and use of color
  • photo selection and image editing
  • tables, graphs and overview pages
  • document structure and technical DTP

On-site inventories – 120 stations visited

For these projects, I personally visited all 120 stations within the six concessions. During these surveys, I mapped out, among other things:

  • traveler facilities
  • Public transport distribution resources
  • walking routes, accessibility and sight lines
  • chain facilities (bicycle, bus, taxi, P R)
  • retail and rental spaces: layout, use and vacancy
  • territorial separations (NS, ProRail, municipality, third parties)

I then processed the collected data into the documents and maps, so that NS Stations and ProRail could offer the provinces a complete, up-to-date, and verifiable overview.

Collaboration & results

This multi-year project required technical precision, flexibility, and intensive coordination. Combining various data sources, site visits, and continuous updates made this one of the most versatile and educational projects of my career.

The final set of documents will form a complete and reliable reference work used by provinces, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), NS (Dutch Railways), ProRail, and transport companies during tenders. Visually consistent, content-accurate, and clearly structured.
